Art Camp #3: A Fantasy World!

Our final week of Art Camp for the summer was a study of different ways of creating characters through puppets, masks and drama. First we told lots of stories and discussed characters and plot. Then we chose a few stories to dramatize ourselves. We started simply with a paper bag puppet version of “The Three Little Pigs”. I wish I’d got some pictures of how different pigs and wolves can look when everyone puts their own creative touches to them! We also explored emotions and how we can read each others emotions by looking carefully at facial features and listening to tones of voice. We created simple masks using paper plates and collaging facial features in interesting combinations (similar to our Picasso project here). We spent a lot of the week working on an interpretation of Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” and created excellent masks for that dramatization. On our last day we talked about backdrops and sets and collaborated on an ocean backdrop for our jellyfish “marionettes” which danced to many ocean-themed songs!
